I spent a few days [at Bernancourt] and painful ones they were. Then I was sent down by ambulance train to Rouen, where I was lodged in No. 8 Base Hospital. This train journey was like a funeral. We took nineteen hours to get to Amiens and another ten hours to get from there to Rouen.
The Base Hospital was equally unpleasant. All sorts of painful dressings were applied and they caused agonies to get off. The poor fellow in the bed next to me was off his head and at one period threatened to do me in.
